Unit 1, Lesson 1
Unit 1, Formal Letters/Emails
You've written Activity 1 in class (look at 'Letters/emails of recommendation' below)
Activity 2 is for Homework (at the bottom of the first page). Write it on the same paper you used in class !
Remember to use the correct greeting at the beginning and at the end of the letter (look at 'Guidelines to write formal letters/emails' below) and pay attention to the following (you can also watch the video below):
a) choose appropriate vocabulary (e.g.avoid slang)
b) don't use abbreviations, contractions or acronyms (e.g.I'm, I can't, ASAP etc.)
c) choose passive structures when appropriate
d) try to use more complex structures (adding relative pronouns, e.g. which, whose etc. or linkers e.g. Firstly, Moreover etc.)
What's the difference between formal and informal English?
How do you speak more informally?
Watch this free online English lesson to find out how.
It will help you tunderstand how to write a formal email/letter, too.
