Unit 5: Lesson 1: Animal Rights
In this unit we will work on animal rights.
Lesson 1 starts with some warm up activities. We will start thinking and we will try to determine whether animals have rights, what they are and what we do to ensure that they are not violated.
Watch the video and then do the exercise that follows.
Anne Flaherty, a high school student once obsessed with marine mammals shares how her realizations about how humans treat animals requires actions both personal and community wide. In Animal Rights: A Series of Realizations Anne shows us how we can align our actions with our beliefs. Anne was recently appointed to the 2015 National Youth Leadership Council of Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots, an organization dedicated to conservation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
There is much disagreement as to whether animals have rights or not. What do you think?
Discuss the following questions, keeping notes:
1. Are animals man's property?
2. Is it alright if we kill animals for food?
3. Is it alright if we use animals for hard labour?
4. Is it alright if we use animals for entertainment?
5. Can you think of any other cases that cause disagreement concerning animal rights?
6. Which treatment is considered unethical?
7. Can using or killing animals be justified for special reasons?
