Unit 4 Vincent van Gogh

Creative writing: Imagine that you are a small wooden pirate on your desk in your room. This book is the story of your life. Before you start writing you have to decide on the following:

  • Where and when does your story start?
  • How are you going to start (introduction) in order to make your readers interested in your story?
  • What tenses are you going to use?
  • What is going to be the message of your story?

Exercise 1 

Read the song lyrics on page 38 and answer the following questions:

1. Do you think that the song reflects Van Gogh's attitude and feelings? If so mention specific verses.

2. How does this song make you feel?

3. Write up to 5 sentences giving facts about Van Gogh's life, based on the song.

Study the text on pages 41 and 42. The following questions will help you.

1. When was Vincent born?

2. What was his family like?

3. Did he get along with his brother?

4. Who was his first teacher?

5. What happened in Monmartre?

6. What techniques influenced his artistic style?

7. What was Vincent like as an adult?

8. Why did he have to go to the asylum?

9. How did he spend his time there?

10. How did he die?

11. What was his painting style?

12. When and how was his work recognised?

13. Which was his other talent?

14. What happened with Gauguin?

C. Read the biography and answer briefly the questions of your book on page 43.

Browse the sites https://www.vangoghmuseum.nl and https://artsandculture.google.com/, choose a painting that impressed you and write in your book the relevant notes. Next time we meet online share your information with the rest of the class.

Watch the video Van Gogh in his own words Note down in your book Vincent's words that impressed you most and why.

Exercise 5

Play the game and study the vocabulary.

 

Exercise 6

Based on the work you've done in class and Van Gogh's biography, observe the following paintings and create an imaginary dialogue between Van Gogh and Dr Gachet.

Exercise 7

Based on the work you did during this unit write an article for your school ebook, presenting Van Gogh's life and work from your own point of view. The article will be entitled "My Vincent Van Gogh". The best articles will be published in your ebook. (Deadline Wednesday 2 December)
